Investing in Education

At Ternan Energy we passionately believe in learning and development – both individually and as a team. As a direct result, two years ago we created our Continuing Education Bursary (CEB) scheme to support our team to undertake further education.

Our CEB supports our team in various ways, including:

  1. Grants that don’t have to be paid back.
  2. Loans which are paid back via salary sacrifice schemes.
  3. Paid time off – to allow individuals the time they need to attend lectures and seminars and prepare for exams and the like.

Our hybrid, flexible working policy and mentoring schemes also help our team to have time to study when they want to and the support from our wider team if and when they need it.

India Grimbley, our Business Support Manager, joined Ternan two years ago following 8 years of experience in a non-energy related industry. India is currently studying for a BA in Business Management at Robert Gordons University, Aberdeen.

India commented:

“Ternan has been great at providing support and constant encouragement throughout my distance learning process. By investing in my future, Ternan has allowed me to gain a formal qualification whilst working, meaning I can get my bachelor’s degree in as little as 12 months”.

James Deacon, our recently appointed Principal Geotechnical Engineer in Oxford, is studying for an MSc in Engineering Geology at the University of Portsmouth. Ternan has paid James’s course fees and supports him to take day release to attend lectures and tutorials.

James commented:

“Being given day release has allowed me to continue studying for my MSc whist progressing my career with Ternan. The support and encouragement I have been given from day one has been fantastic and show’s Ternan’s commitment to staff development and career progression”.

Phoebe Lipp, who was our summer intern in 2019 and is now a Geotechnical Engineer in our Aberdeen office. Phoebe successfully completed her MSc in Soil Mechanics and Business Management at Imperial College London last October. Ternan supported Phoebe with a grant towards her costs and mentoring during her studies.

On this Mark Finch, Managing Director, commented:

“At Ternan we're proud of our people and what we achieve together. Our CEB helps individuals to develop their careers – to everyone’s benefit. We believe that lifelong learning is as a way of life”.
