Since Mark founded Ternan Energy in 2016, we’ve grown from a vision in a spare room in Aberdeenshire to a team of more than 20 multi-disciplinary specialists across four UK offices. The Ground Engineering Awards judges recognised our technical achievements, business growth, and our commitment to supporting the offshore energy transition.
Our growth has been remarkable. We’ve delivered over 350 projects across more than 30 countries, and our annual revenues are on track to exceed £4.8 million. More importantly, we’ve established ourselves as a trusted partner in the offshore wind supply chain, working on major developments including Dogger Bank South, Caledonia Offshore Windfarm, and Moray West.

What we’re particularly proud of is the tangible value we deliver. Our work on the Moray West project alone enabled savings into the millions through optimised cable burial risk assessments and trenching operations support. This exemplifies our approach – applying deep technical expertise to solve real-world challenges.
Our proposal values have grown while our win rate has improved. We’ve more than doubled our offshore survey support days in 2024 compared to previous years, reflecting the trust clients place in our capabilities.

Recent highlights include serving as an independent geotechnical engineer on the Buchan Floating Offshore Wind Farm Technical Authority Review Panel, providing innovative real-time survey progress tracking tools for RWE’s projects, and supporting Ocean Winds with the deployment of semi-autonomous survey vessels. These projects demonstrate our position at the cutting edge of offshore technology innovation.
Our partnership with the Hartree Institute to develop AI-enhanced data interpretation tools shows our commitment to staying ahead of industry trends and delivering even greater value to our clients.

The judges particularly commended our commitment to staff wellbeing and professional development. We’ve introduced early Friday finishes, flexible working arrangements, generous matched pension contributions, and comprehensive support for professional chartership. We’ve also expanded our geographic presence with offices in Brighton and South Queensferry to better serve clients while improving work-life balance for our team.
