Aggie Georgiopoulou Wins Technical Excellence Award at Inspiring Women in Engineering 2025
This month we announced that Aggeliki Georgiopoulou, our Geoscience Manager, won the Technical Excellence Award at the Inspiring Women in Engineering Awards 2025. This recognition celebrates Aggie’s outstanding contribution to marine geoscience and her ability to combine deep technical expertise with innovative problem-solving.
Recognition of Excellence
The Inspiring Women in Engineering Awards celebrate outstanding women across the engineering and construction sectors who demonstrate exceptional technical capability, leadership, and commitment to advancing their fields. Aggie’s win acknowledges not just her impressive academic credentials and industry expertise, but her ability to deliver real-world impact on critical projects.
With close to 20 years of experience spanning academia and industry, Aggie has established herself as a preeminent expert in marine geology. Earlier this year, she was also recognised among the top 20 women in Ground Engineering, testament to her standing within the profession
Aggie says: “I feel honoured to receive this award and I’m grateful to all the mentors I’ve had in my career that have given me the skills recognised by this award, grateful to my colleagues at Ternan Energy and to our clients that trust me/us with their interesting and challenging projects. Massive thank you to GE and the judging panel!”
Technical Expertise That Makes a Difference
Aggie’s capabilities are firmly rooted in extensive academic credentials – BSc (Hons) in Geology, MSc in Oceanography, and PhD in Marine Geology – complemented by over 45 peer-reviewed scientific publications. Her nine years as a university lecturer and her role as External Examiner for Bangor University’s MSc in Applied Marine Geoscience reflect her standing as a technical authority.
This academic foundation translates directly into practical problem-solving on complex offshore projects
Identifying Critical Issues
During an offshore windfarm project, while reviewing the proposed turbine layout for a cable burial risk assessment, Aggie identified a significant hazard that had been overlooked in previous planning stages: the layout would require cables to traverse a sand bank that seasonally emerged above sea level.
Rather than simply proceeding with the standard assessment, Aggie proactively engaged with the client, highlighting the critical safety concern while simultaneously presenting innovative alternative design options that would mitigate the risk.
The client embraced her recommendations, initiating a collaborative design review process that resulted in a layout balancing commercial viability with technical safety requirements. Her early identification of this critical flaw prevented potentially catastrophic outcomes, including project delays, substantial redesign costs, and potential cable failures that could have led to power outages and environmental incidents.
This case exemplifies Aggie’s approach: combining deep domain knowledge with innovative problem-solving and collaborative engagement to identify critical issues, develop practical solutions, and effectively communicate technical complexities to stakeholders.
Leading the Next Generation
Beyond her technical achievements, Aggie’s impact on Ternan extends to mentoring and leadership.
As Euan Marjoribanks, our Managing Director, notes:
“Our whole team is inspired by Aggie, who brings a positive can-do attitude (and razor-sharp wit) to her work day in and day out. From the most experienced consultants to our fresh graduates, the team knows that Aggie’s door is always open.”
India Grimbley, our Operations Director, adds: “Aggie has no ego, is always approachable, and clearly wants to help. She cares about team development. Having a close connection, a companion, has given me the confidence to speak up and push further.”
As Geoscience Manager, Aggie helps lead our diverse technical team of geoscientists, geophysicists, geologists and GIS analysts, manages their workload and development, contributes to strategic company planning and supervises internal R&D projects.
Her role in preparing the next generation with the information, skills and techniques they need to advance their careers is invaluable to Ternan’s continued growth and success.
Building on Success
This award follows hot on the heels of Ternan Energy being named Consulting Firm of the Year at the Ground Engineering Awards 2025, reflecting the calibre of talent and expertise across our entire team.
Aggie’s win demonstrates that our success is built on the exceptional capabilities of individuals who are committed to advancing technical standards and delivering outstanding results for our clients.
Congratulations to Aggie on this well-deserved recognition. Her technical prowess, leadership and commitment to mentoring the next generation of marine geoscientists exemplify the values that drive Ternan Energy forward.
